To date, we know little of the early life of Rufus Worden. In the 1790 census of Shaftsbury, Vermont, Rufus and his brother, Judah, were listed. In 1810, they were no longer listed in the census of Shaftsbury. In the township of Brutus, Cayuga County, New York, 24 February 1805, Judus Worden sold 100 acres to Rufus Worden. Rufus was listed in the 1810 census of Cayuga County, New York.
On May 20, 1812, an inventory and petition to sell real estate was filed by Tabitha Worden, widow of Rufus Worden, deceased, and others of the town of Brutus, New York.
On the first day of February, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and seventeen, Tabitha Worden, Widow of Rufus Worden, deceased, Mercy Worden, Ripha Worden and Rebecca, his wife, Robert B. Worden and Sally, his wife, David Yates and Lydia, his wife, of the town of Brutus in the county of Cayuga in the state of New York sold fifty acres to Ansel Kimball.
